Is Winnie the Pooh a girl?

Recently, there was a rather shocking tweet claiming that beloved Disney character Winnie the Pooh is a girl:

But is it true? Many people, if asked “Is Winnie the Pooh a boy or a girl?” would reply that “Winnie the Pooh is male”. To find out the truth, lets look into the history of Pooh bear.

If we look back far enough, we can even shockingly see that Winnie the Pooh’s real name is actually Edward:

So, what is going on? Here are some interesting facts:

  • “Winnie the Pooh” author A. A. Milne purchased a toy bear from Harrods department store in London for his son, Christopher Robin, for his first birthday, August 21st 1921. He named the bear Edward, because the nickname “Teddy” is a shortened version of Edward (so “Edward bear” instead of “teddy bear”).
  • In the 1920s, there was a famous black bear living in London Zoo, who had been nicknamed “Winnie”. The bear had received this name because it had previously been the mascot of the Winnipeg regiment of the Canadian army.
  • A. A. Milne also wrote a best-selling book of poetry entitled “When we were very young”; in this book there was a swan named Pooh.
